  Founded in 2001, the French Academy of Management (SFM, “Société Française de Management”) aims at enabling professors and researchers in management to contribute proactively to shaping the institutional setting of their academic field.

The goal is to act as a creative and autonomous force in the area of management research and education in order to participate in its collective governance. Ad hoc SFM working parties are dedicated to key topics, such as discussing requirements for PhDs in management, evaluating publications or setting quality requirements for academic contributions. The outputs of the working parties’ collective investigation and analysis consist of green papers that summarize diagnoses and recommendations. Initial drafts are discussed within SFM and then made public after revision and validation.

As a result of this process, SFM generates “soft law” and thus plays an active role in contributing to structure the academic field of management.

The SFM community comprises deans and presidents of academic institutions as well as faculty and researchers. It deals with issues of concern to all stakeholders who are related to the academic field of management (students, managers, companies, government and society at large). Members of the SFM community typically face complex challenges such as international competition (among scholars, programs or universities), career paths, ranking issues, research financing and legitimacy of the management field within academia as well as in the business community.

SFM maintains a strong relationship with various intellectual, scientific and research-oriented societies and associations in the academic field of management and beyond. A member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), SFM strongly believes that French and European perspectives on management can make an important contribution to further advance the understanding of collective action within and among organizations.
